This website development has sparked some of the neighbors who have very long ties back with Providence to share stories and photos of years gone by. Please feel free to send anything along, we’d enjoy sharing.
Mary Jane Groce, circa 1942. In one image she is standing with Sister Bernardo, who used to work in surgery. Her parents built one of the first houses on Hazelfern Place and she has lived in the neighborhood her entire life. Mary Jane’s husband went overseas during WWII and while he was away Providence hired her to work in the Business Office. Part of her employ included room and board. The 47th street entrance was the main entrance and straight down the hall were very small rooms with a cot and a sink and that is where she called home at the age of 22. She got to know Sister Bernardo, who worked in surgery, and says that she was a wonderful person. (images and story printed with permission)
